🦢 Welcome to The Lennox Chronicles
Unraveling the truth, the myths, and the royal drama behind one of Scotland’s most powerful families.
📜 History isn’t always written by the victors—sometimes it’s just written by whoever had the best quill and the least shame. That ends today.
Welcome to The Lennox Chronicles, your front-row seat to the origin story of the mighty Lennox line—starting with none other than Maol Domhnaich, the 3rd Earl of Lennox (a.k.a. Maldoen, Maol Domhnaich mac Ailín, or if you're fancy, “Maldouenus Comes de Levenax”).
👑 The Royal Setup: Scotland, 1220s
It was a spicy decade. Scotland was under the rule of King Alexander II, a reforming monarch with a habit of centralizing power—and real estate. One of his bigger moves? He confiscated Dumbarton Castle, a longtime fortress of the ancient Earls of Lennox, for royal use.
That left the powerful Lennox family in need of a new stronghold... and a shift in territory.
Cue Maldoen, 3rd Earl of Lennox: a man of ambition, strategy, and some say, subtle rebellion. Around 1225–1226 AD, he carved out lands for loyal followers and key vassals—including a fateful land grant to a Norman-Scots knight named Umfridus de Kilpatrick. And what lands were those?
👉 Colquhoun, on the western shore of Loch Lomond. That’s right, the birthplace of Clan Colquhoun, and the roots of a legend.
🏰 Who Was This Maldoen, Anyway?
-
Name: Maol Domhnaich (Maldoen), 3rd Earl of Lennox
-
Flair: Diplomatic, possibly defiant, generous to loyal men
-
Legacy: Reorganizer of the Lennox after royal land grabs
-
Claim to Fame: One of the first to restructure the Highland landscape post-Norman influence, he was a true bridge between Gaelic chieftainship and feudal lordship.
He didn’t just rule—he redistributed. Through charters (some of which survive), he legitimized the rise of clans we know today: Colquhoun, MacFarlane, Galbraith, Buchanan, and others who all owe their early power to Maldoen’s land strategies.
👀 The Truth. The Myths. The Flat-Out Lies.
Let’s face it—Highland history can be murky. We’ve got legends passed down through smoky hearths, charters forged or embellished, and tales so twisted they make a Highland coo dizzy.
Here at The Lennox Chronicles, we’re on a mission to dig through it all:
-
🔎 Was Dumbarton Castle truly "confiscated"—or was there a power play behind closed castle doors?
-
🛡️ Did Maldoen gift the lands out of loyalty… or out of political necessity?
-
🧬 Can modern DNA finally settle which clans are truly descended from Lennox blood?
We follow the truth, the half-truths, and the delicious outright fabrications that history’s been dining on for centuries. Because let’s be honest—the dirt is half the fun.
